Chinese New Year 2024: Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon; 2023 the Year of the Rabbit. And check out Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Philly!

Beable is a literacy program that challenges teens to improve their literacy skills, while connecting them to what matters most (personal interests and career aspirations). Great work, Ines!

|
I Wish to Say. . . a collaboration with University of the Arts (permission slip needed)
As part of the English curriculum, 9th and 10th graders are currently writing persuasive speeches about an issue they find important, while 11th and 12th graders are currently studying issues of justice in the criminal justice system.
In collaboration with University of the Arts, we are offering our students the opportunity to translate their English curriculum studies into a visual and public art opportunity!
These students would be participating in Sharyl Oring’s “I Wish to Say. . .” project. In this project, the artists sit behind typewriters and ask participants what they wish to say to the next president of the U.S. The resulting letters are then used to create handmade prints, booklets, and exhibitions. To allow your student to participate in the first round of the project as participants, please complete this permission form and return it physically or scan and email it to sydnie@revolutionschool.org.

Health and Wellness
We are excited to announce our Spring Speaker Series: Health Matters 2024. During select Wellness periods, we have invited local professionals to join the 9th and 10th graders in classroom discussions and activities based on the following topics: mental health, drug and alcohol awareness, sex education, nutrition, and self-advocacy.
February and March Speakers:
February 26: The Body Empowerment Project, Clara Pritchett. Topics include body acceptance, self-worth, eating disorder risks and prevention, body positivity and mental health.
March 3: The Shipley School/SEED Program (Social, Emotional and Ethical Development), Jamie O’Leary Topics include anatomy and physiology, and cultural messages around sex.
March 13: The Shipley School/SEED Program, Jamie O’Leary Topics include healthy/unhealthy relationships, consent and body autonomy, and advocating for yourself in a relationship.
March 18: The Shipley School/SEED Program, Jamie O’Leary
Topics include safe sex/contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and healthcare.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art’s Free After-School Studio Art Program
Registration is open for PAFA’s free Spring afterschool art program! Do you want to learn more about oil painting or illustration? Just a few blocks from Revolution School, PAFA’s program offers two free 10-week college level art courses taught by their faculty — all art supplies are provided! Portfolio review and guidance on the art school application process is available for those who want to pursue art education. Additional discounts are available if the student wishes to register for an additional class, or wants to apply for a special Summer Academy scholarship. ISACS Parent Series (Zoom): Tuesday, February 13 at 7:30pm.
Please join us as we welcome author and educator Rosetta Lee. Young people bear witness to challenging or traumatic events in current news, media, and local communities. They are often trying to process thoughts, feelings, and reactions without explicit help and guidance — thereby increasing their confusion and anxiety. As adults, we have a natural instinct to protect our children from harsh realities while also preparing them to navigate this complex world — is it possible to do both?
What are ways to talk about identity, difference, and justice in age-appropriate ways? How do you reinforce your family’s values without instilling disrespect for other perspectives? How do you coach young people toward authentic and respectful dialogue across differences? Engage in these questions and more! There will be time for Q&A. The webinar will focus on grades K-8 but will be valuable to parents of children of all ages.

FIELDWORK & COMMUNITY BUILDING
|
11th and 12th Fieldwork: This week, Revolution students met with Judge Shanese Johnson and observed a domestic violence trial as part of their third quarter study of the criminal justice system in Philadelphia.

9th and 10th Fieldwork: Environmental Science students went to the Art Museum and the Fairmount Water Works. They got water samples and tested its pH, nitrate levels, and more. They also saw baby mussels in the mussel hatchery!

|
|
Community Building: This week, the Student Leadership Council led a marshmallow-building competition which focused on active listening and communication.
