CELEBRATING & PLANNING

🧡 Black History Month is an annual celebration (every February) in the United States that recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Black Americans.

Chinese New Year 2024: Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon; 2023 the Year of the Rabbit. And check out Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Philly!

Spirit Week: The Student Leadership Council invites you to participate in Revolution Spirit Week beginning Friday February 23! Here is the full schedule: Friday: Emo Day Monday: Twin Day/ Uniquely You! Tuesday: Throwback Day Wednesday: Dress Like a Teacher Day Thursday: Character/Celebrity Day Friday: Pajama Day.

Thank you to Chrisma for organizing a potluck lunch in celebration of Black History Month and Valentine’s Day. The menu included mac and cheese bites, salmon, shrimp and grits, fried chicken, collard greens, crab and corn fritters, yams, several chips and dips, and tons of desserts! Thanks to all who contributed to make the event such a success!

Special thanks to Corina Deng and Syd Schwarz who led a World Wednesday presentation about the Lunar New Year!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thursday Feb 22 Field Work Details

9th/10th grade students will be visiting the College of Public Health at Temple University. Students will be leaving before lunch during their history class. Please have students pack a lunch or come prepared to purchase lunch from one of the food trucks located on campus.

11th/12th grade students will be going to UArts in the morning and visiting the Philadelphia Defenders Office in the afternoon. Students can choose if they would like to pack or buy lunch.

Health and Wellness

We are excited to announce our Spring Speaker Series: Health Matters 2024. During select Wellness periods, we have invited local professionals to join the 9th and 10th graders in classroom discussions and activities based on the following topics: mental health, drug and alcohol awareness, sex education, nutrition, and self-advocacy.

February and March Speakers:

February 26: Clara Pritchett. Topics include body acceptance, self-worth, eating disorder risks and prevention, body positivity, and mental health.

March 3: Jamie O’Leary Topics include anatomy and physiology, and cultural messages around sex.

March 13: Jamie O’Leary Topics include healthy/unhealthy relationships, consent and body autonomy, and advocating for yourself in a relationship.

March 18: Jamie O’Leary Topics include safe sex/contraception, sexually transmitted infections, and healthcare.

There will be more speakers in April and May! In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Katherine at katherine@revolutionschool.org with any questions or concerns.

Pre-college summer opportunities with financial aid!

The Coalition for College works to expand college access to communities that have been historically under-represented. This list of affordable summer programs at colleges and universities is very helpful. Participating in a pre-college summer program is a great way to further explore your interests, get a taste of what it is like to be a college student, visit a college campus, and even boost your academic profile.

Summer Dual Enrollment Information for Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Families

FIELDWORK & COMMUNITY BUILDING

Grades 9 and 10

Our Environmental Science students traveled to Wissahickon Creek and tested the water quality at various locations. They hiked about two miles during the trip!

Grades 11 and 12

Our students went to the UArts Atelier print center to create a design for two poster books — one about Lakota Woman and the other about the criminal justice system. Students returned with typewriters to conduct their own collection of public voices about current issues in our society.
