UPCOMING FIELDWORK
On Monday, Sept 23, Grades 11 and 12 will walk to the Friends Meeting House on Cherry Street to continue their semester-long collaboration with TriCo and the course, “Philadelphia & the 2024 Election.” Dr. Laurison will be sharing his research on Philadelphians’ political behavior, and the students will further discuss and strategize the research in assigned interscholastic groups. They will have their normal lunch block and can pack or buy.
On Thursday, Sept 26, Grade 9 will go to City Hall for the press conference on the proposed Chinatown basketball arena, and then they will visit the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art (PAFA) on North Broad Street. They will have lunch at the Reading Terminal Market — students may pack a lunch or bring money to buy lunch there.
On Thursday, Sept 26, Grades 10, 11, and 12 are going to Penn State Abington for an information session about careers and internships followed by a campus tour. They will also participate in a college admissions and financial aid session. Students will leave Revolution School around 9am — lunch will be provided for them in the dining hall.
On Friday, Sept 27, Grades 11 and 12 will leave Revolution School at 12:15pm to join Tri-Co students, Swarthmore professors, and a Revolution School chaperone, to go to one of three lunch locations: City View Pizza on Temple University’s campus, Rustica in Northern Liberties, or Oh Brother in Old City. Students will then walk to nearby parks to eat their lunch and work in their research groups. In order to accommodate this excursion, Grades 11 and 12 will follow a Monday schedule on Sept 27 (except for the last block of the day), and then on Monday Sept 30, they will follow a Friday schedule (except for the last block). Digital Media, Fall 2024
Revolution School alum, Titus Elican (Class of 2023), will be supporting Carolyn Arosell in the Digital Media course this Fall. Titus will share his experience in digital marketing, social media management, and content creation, as well as help advance Revolution School’s social media presence. AFTER SCHOOL STUDENT ENRICHMENT TIME (ASSET)
One of Revolution School’s primary pillars is Personalization for our students — this includes providing additional academic support based on a student’s interest or need. Beginning this Monday, Sept 23, we will offer After School Student Enrichment Time (ASSET), which is an opportunity for extended learning — or a chance to catch-up — with one-on-one time and attention in a subject with a teacher. ASSET takes place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:50 pm (the faculty will work with you to help formulate a day/frequency plan). We will be reaching out to families throughout the year whose students we feel may benefit from ASSET.

REVCHAT LAUNCHES CHATTERBOX
REVchat is launching a weekly newsletter, Chatterbox! REVchat is an internship program founded by Revolution School alumni that teaches students the art of constructive communication and professional skills. REVchat hosted two sessions of interns this summer, and they are currently working with Grades 11 and 12 in an elective class. REVchat will be circulating Chatterbox on a weekly basis to keep readers entertained and informed about the Gen Z perspective on work!

SDLC FUNDRAISER
For the third year, Revolution School will send student ambassadors to the Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) hosted by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). This year’s conference will take place Dec 4–7 in Denver, Colorado.
Every Fall, Revolution students are given an informational presentation about the conference and are encouraged to apply to attend; the Selection Committee chooses 4-6 applicants based on a set of criteria and notifies selected students by October.
We will kick-off our SDLC fundraising with DoubleGood popcorn! Participating students will host a link where you can purchase the popcorn — we will include students’ popcorn shop links in the next newsletter! (You will be able to order popcorn from Thursday, Sept 26 until Monday, September 30 at 5pm.)
In addition, our students will be hosting multiple bake sales in the lobby of 230 S. Broad Street, so stay tuned for upcoming details! Please consider clicking this link to make a direct donation to help cover the cost of flights, hotel rooms, and meals.

Please be sure to have your students get to school by 8:15 am to ensure that classes can start promptly at 8:30 am. The Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair is the largest HBCU College Fair on the East Coast. Some colleges and universities in attendance will be offering on-site acceptances, so students are encouraged to bring copies of their unofficial transcripts. Grades 9 and 10 traveled to Morris Park to complete some community service for Friends of Morris Park by removing invasive Japanese Knotweed disrupting the ecosystem. They also enjoyed a scenic nature hike and a picnic lunch by the creek!

Grades 11 and 12 read the introductory chapter of Philadelphia Battlefields in Rittenhouse Park. Tri-Co students also read this text and will treat it as a point of reference in our research collaboration this fall.

Widener Engineering Mini-Camp — 12th Grade students
Widener’s School of Engineering invites local high school seniors to learn about different engineering disciplines by interacting with faculty and current engineering students. A concurrent program for parents and guardians covers the admissions process, financial aid and planning for engineering school. Sept 27 from 9am–1pm Registration is NOW OPEN until September 23rd.

Calling All Girl Bosses
This is a year-long program empowering girls in Philadelphia to lead the change they want to see in their neighborhoods. It was developed by Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) as a blueprint to give Philadelphia girls in grades 6–12 the skills they need to identify a community problem and take action to find a solution. The program is FREE for girls. Lunch and transportation will be provided for each workshop. Click this link to learn more.

Innovation League
This is an opportunity for entrepreneurial students in Grades 9–12 in Philadelphia who want to learn how to build businesses while growing their skills and solving problems in their community. Like a traditional sports league, students attend weekly practices led by tech mentors and build their technology, leadership, and social skills. Registration closes October 1st.

Antiracist Teach-In — Saturday Sept 21, 9:30–11:30am
This will be in-person at Greene Street Friends School — a morning of learning focused on antiracist instruction led by Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul and Tricia Ebarvia. This workshop for teachers and parents/caregivers will give strategies to enhance reading and learning with kids, whether in the classroom or at home. This will be followed by a reading and conversation with children’s and middle grade author Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow. Uncle Bobbie’s will be onsite with a “pop-up” bookshop with books featured throughout the morning and many others. Science of Reading Day @ Drexel — Thursday Sept 26, 4–9pm
This will be in-person at Bossone Research Enterprise Center (3140 Market Street) on the Drexel campus.
