HIGHLIGHTS

Grades 11 and 12 went to Cosmic Writers at Kelly Writers House (University of Pennsylvania) for a workshop on realistic fiction. Students rated different examples of conflict on a scale of 1-10 based on the seriousness of the stakes.

Barbara Bluejay of The Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania (LNPA) spoke with students in Grades 11 and 12.

Students explored University of Pennsylvania on their way to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA). Their current exhibition, Mavis Pusey: Mobile Images, marks the first major museum survey dedicated to the Jamaican-born artist (1928-2019). Her prolific career spanned 50 years, much of it spent creating geometric abstraction.

Project Lab

Each day, students dive into hands-on, exploratory work during Project Lab — a dedicated block for student-led projects that deepen and complement their coursework.

Students continued work on their 3D crime scene scenarios, challenging their classmates to investigate the evidence and reconstruct what happened using the scientific method: observation, question, hypothesis, evidence-collecting, analysis, and conclusion.

In order to learn about dependent and independent variables, students took part in a paper airplane workshop. Each student made two, nearly identical paper airplanes except for one specific change — and then they evaluated the effect of that change on flight distance and other measures.

Grades 11 and 12 visited the warehouse of Solar States, a B-corporation that not only builds and installs solar power for residences and businesses, but also educates the community about its benefits. Our students learned about the opportunities available in the industry and how concepts like safety and teamwork are essential to success. After learning how to safely climb a ladder, students got hands-on experience installing and removing solar panels with help from the Solar States team

Community-Building

At this week’s all-school assembly, January (grade 11), Kimora (grade 11), and Zion (Grade 12) did a terrific presentation on boundaries, personal space, and consent.

Wellness

Grades 11 and 12 enjoyed Seger Park yesterday, playing pickup basketball and badminton games.

These workshops are for Black and East Asian teens in the areas of Community Building, Mental Health, and Professional Development. PACAC College Fair — Tuesday, October 14, 6:30–8pm at Thomas Jefferson University, Gallagher Athletic Center, 4201 Henry Avenue. Hosted by Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling, this regional fair provides high school students and their families a chance to connect with participating colleges.
