Indigenous Peoples’ Day will be observed this year on Mon Oct 14 — we celebrate the First Peoples of the Americas, and commemorate their histories and cultures. Here is a link to honor this day in Philadelphia. This event will combine traditional and contemporary indigenous art, music, dance, and food to increase awareness of indigenous issues. It will be held at Shackamaxon (Penn Treaty) Park, 1301 N Beach Street in Philadelphia, from 11 AM to 5 PM.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually observed in the US from Sept 15 to Oct 15 — we recognize and celebrate the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the nation’s achievements, culture, and history!

Global Diversity Awareness Month is a month to celebrate and increase awareness about the diversity of cultures and ethnicities and the positive impact diversity can have on society.

UPCOMING FIELDWORK
Grades 9 and 10
On Thursday, October 17th, 9th and 10th graders will be doing research for their Civics Interview Project. Students will practice interview techniques and will collect data by asking teachers, seniors, parents, relatives, and strangers: “Are you voting?” and “Why or why not?”. Students will be conducting research in the area around Revolution School, such as the Kimmel Center and Rittenhouse Square.
(Grades 11 and 12 do not have fieldwork on Monday, Oct 14 because there is no school for Indigenous Peoples’ Day.)

Back to School for Parents & Guardians
Thank you to everyone who attended our Back to School event! We had a fantastic turnout, and it was wonderful to see so many of you engaging with our faculty and staff. We were especially honored to have our school’s founder, Gina Moore, visit and share her continued vision for Revolution School.

During the evening, we provided a brief overview of what our students are doing and learning this year. We are so very happy and grateful to have your students as part of our school community, and we look forward to watching them grow and thrive in the months ahead.
With partnership in mind, we encourage you to share your unique talents and skills with our school community, as we believe that everyone brings something valuable to the table. Here’s to a great 2024-2025 school year!

Student Civic & Community Engagement Summit
This past Saturday, Grades 11 and 12 attended the Student Civic & Community Engagement Summit at Friends Select School. This program was designed to empower students to take action in the election process. Shout out to all of the students that participated!

SDLC Bake Sale
Shout out to all of the students, families, and faculty members who participated in the SDLC Bake Sale! In total, the bake sale raised $894! All proceeds go towards our students attending the Student Diversity and Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Student Spotlight: Zaf Acuna!
Zaf joined us this year after moving from the Philippines. The students in Digital Media interviewed Zaf about living in the Philippines and adjusting to living in Philadelphia.
How long did you live in the Philippines?
I lived in the Philippines for 15 years.

I am from Davao City.
How is the weather in the Philippines compared to Philadelphia?
It’s so hot in the Philippines all year – while here it’s only hot in the summer.
What is your favorite thing you did in the Philippines?
Playing sports with my friends!
What language do you speak?
I speak Tagalog, Bisaya and English.
What do you miss most about living in the Philippines?
I miss my cousins and my friends. I loved going to the mall and the arcade with my friends. I also miss my teachers there and my old school. Lastly, I miss going to my favorite park and playing with my dogs.
What do you like about living in Philadelphia?
I like my friends here! I also love going to Rittenhouse Square because it’s chill when I’m sitting there or just walking around the fountain.

ASSET UPDATE
Providing support and enrichment to all of our students is ASSET’s sole purpose. We strive to teach your children how to advocate for themselves and use the resources available to them as an institution. As a result, it is a pleasure to see our students engaging with our faculty. SDLC FUNDRAISERS
Please join us in raising money to help defray the costs for our Revolution School student ambassadors — Camelle, Makayla, Anthony, Hailey, and January — as they represent Revolution School at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in Denver, Colorado. Last year, we raised $4257. This year’s goal is $6500.

SDLC ROLLER SKATE COSTUME PARTY
Family and friends, join us for a ROLLER SKATE COSTUME PARTY fundraiser on Sunday, October 27 from 4:30–7:30 pm at Philly Skate Plex (11586 Roosevelt Blvd). Wednesday Nov 20 — 2024 Malcolm Bernard HBCU Fair, 3:30-7pm.
The Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair is the largest HBCU College Fair on the East Coast. Some colleges and universities in attendance will be offering on-site acceptances, so students are encouraged to bring copies of their unofficial transcripts. FIELDWORK
Grades 9 and 10
Our students traveled to ShopRite to learn about supply chains and what is necessary to run a major supermarket chain. They learned about grocery purchasing, advertising, social media management, community partnerships, finance, and more!

Grades 11 and 12
Our students continued their collaboration with Tri-Co Philly and their research on the 2024 Election. Once all of the research groups finalized their research plan, Revolution Students got to play ping pong in LOVE Park!

Physics
9th and 10th grade Physics students built and decorated their own cars out of wood. This week, students raced them to see which car design was the fastest. Congratulations to Ali Washington for winning the 9th grade race, and Jenna Johnson-Moore for winning the 10th grade race!
