Saturday, December 13, 8am–2pm — The Hidden Genius Project hosts Brother’s Code Event. This free experience introduces participating students to coding, tech entrepreneurship, and leadership while connecting them to mentors and opportunities within the technology sector.

An Eastern State senior educator held a workshop with our US Literature students on prison labor and modern day slavery.

Federal Judge Elizabeth Hay and attorney Melissa Margulies presented to our US History class on what makes a good judge. This presentation is part of the Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts program whose mission is empowering students to become the future jurors, judges and lawyers of our communities.

In Math, Juniors and Seniors continued building the bridge between math and real life by creating their own websites to teach the different ways we solve Systems of Equations — a great mix of content knowledge and communication skills.
Sophomores are deep into our Triangle unit in Geometry, using theorems and postulates to find missing sides and angles — they are beginning to write proofs that show, without a doubt, when two triangles have to be the same.
Our ninth graders wrapped up their Linear Functions unit by embracing some bigger challenges, including solving and graphing absolute value functions and working with compound inequalities.

Students in Syd’s class are developing projects inspired by Octavia Butler’s Kindred. For their extended project work, they may choose to focus on writing, art, or research. Asher (grade 12) is creating a papier-mâché model based on his research, with support from Daeshawn (grade 10).

To help provide context to the 9th and 10th grade students who are designing their own mosques, REV alum Tasneem Abdulah (Class of 2023) visited Joel’s Revolutions class to share about Islam and her experiences on multiple pilgrimages to Mecca. The students asked meaningful questions on topics such as Ramadan, fasting, and the hijab. Thank you, Tas!

Students toured Eastern State Penitentiary and learned about its complex history and ongoing relevance to contemporary social issues. The students also explored the Prisons Today exhibit, further connecting their other studies surrounding criminal justice and the role of prisons in modern society.

This free 10-part discussion series dives into pressing issues in criminal justice today, through a historical lens and with a focus on civic education. Roots to Routes: A Call Forward — January 26–28 in Philadelphia. This new national student conference is by the same founder who led the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (which has been paused). Like SDLC, it’s designed for independent school students, educators, and administrators, centering the voices and well-being of those most often marginalized.
