Students & faculty organized a Book Mixer to discuss their summer reading selections

UPCOMING DATES

Monday, September 8 – Friday, September 19 — All students need to pack a lunch

Tuesday, September 16–Friday, September 19 — MAP Growth Testing. MAP is a personalized, computer-adaptive assessment test issued twice a year to help teachers track achievement and growth in Reading, Language, and Math. The test adjusts in real time, for example: if a student answers a question correctly, a slightly harder question follows. MAP results help inform our faculty when tailoring the personalized classroom experience, as well as tracking student progress from year to year. Please make sure your student arrives at school on time with a charged laptop each day, and encourage them to get plenty of rest each night!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR WEEK

English — books and more books!

All students who didn’t previously have a library card signed up for one at the City Institute branch in Rittenhouse Square. Each student then chose a book from the library or an audiobook/digital book from the Libby app (which is accessed using a library card). Students will be reading their individual books during the first ten minutes of class.

Students have also been working on our all-school summer reading assignment: analyzing and reviewing One Book One Philadelphia’s selection, The Upcycled Self by Tariq Trotter — their reviews are on display on the 20th floor.

And speaking of all things library-related, 11th and 12th grade students received a free copy of Angeline Boulley’s book, Sisters in the Wind, in advance of attending Boulley’s teen author talk at Parkway Central Free Library this Wednesday, September 17 at noon.

Math

Our students have enjoyed getting to know our new Mathematics teacher, Michael Cohen, who integrates real world applications of math, as well as incorporates elements of physics, history, and other cross-curricular subjects into his lessons. Michael makes math fun!

History

In US History, 11th and 12th grade students read two narratives of people coming to America in the mid 1700s. The first was by Olaudah Equiano, who was enslaved in Nigeria and later purchased his own freedom. The second was Gottlieb Mittelberger, who wrote about the plight of indentured servants. Students made a Venn diagram to compare and contrast these experiences.

Grades 9 and 10 made a timeline based on Carl Sagan’s famous essay, Cosmic Calendar, to help understand the 14-billion year history of the universe. The students imagined that relative distances were years — so that, if the Delaware River (visible from the classroom window) is the Big Bang, and if the windows in our classroom represent today, they could calculate where significant historical events would fall on this physical timeline.

Fieldwork

Grade cohorts 9/10 and 11/12 took turns going to the Philadelphia Zoo this week — the students are using the Zoo as training ground for project-based exploration. Ultimately, each student will develop a project plan around something they are curious about, leaning into the scientific method to explore real-world questions. All students will be returning to the zoo this coming week, Grades 9/10 on Tuesday, and Grades 11/12 on Thursday.

Wellness

While many of our students went to the gym for our fitness block, others remained at REV for table tennis and Just Dance.

Admissions Season

Thank you to January and Kimora (both in Grade 11) who joined members of our faculty at an Admissions event at The Philadelphia School. Nothing speaks more highly of a program than students who endorse it! If you know a high school student looking for a revolutionary education, please email our Director of Admissions, Georgia Getz, to get the ball rolling!

Scavenger Hunt

Revolution School students and faculty/staff hit the streets last week for our Annual Orientation Scavenger Hunt. Competition was fierce — in fact, our judges have not yet named a winner! This is a sampling of photos from our seven teams.
