CELEBRATING & PLANNING

🫧 Congratulations to our Fall 2024 Kitchen Clean Up Teams: Many Hands Make Light Work! Special thanks to Lee, Kimora, Grant and Ines for leading the charge. Each student has an assigned week, and we are off to a great start!

🎂 October Birthdays: Patrick Cassidy (10/2), Kai-Lang Yang (10/7), Ali Washington (10/9),  and Amelia Holmes (10/12)

National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually observed in the US from Sept 15 to Oct 15 — we recognize and celebrate the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the nation’s achievements, culture, and history!

THERE WILL BE NO FIELDWORK THIS WEEK

Due to the 11th and 12th Grade Friday/Monday schedules being flipped to allow for their Philly Tri-Co collaboration on Friday (9/27), there will be no fieldwork for them on Monday (9/30).

Grades 9 and 10 will not have fieldwork this week because school is closed on October 3 for Yom Kippur.

REVOLUTION SPOTLIGHT

World Wednesday: American Sign Language

Michael Glick shared an outstanding presentation on American Sign Language for this week’s World Wednesday! Michael is doing a Revolution Independent Study (RIS) of ASL. Thank you, Michael!

Each week the Student Corner will feature a variety of content developed by the 9th and 10th grade Digital Media class. This week we feature a Revolution School Pet Profile and a Revolution School Senior!

REVOLUTION ANNOUNCEMENTS

SDLC FUNDRAISERS

Please help us raise money to send our Revolution School student ambassadors — Camelle, Makayla, Anthony, Hailey and January— to the Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC) in Denver, Colorado.

Last year, we raised $4257. This year’s goal is $6500 to help cover the cost of flights, hotel rooms, and meals.

We kick-off our SDLC fundraising with DoubleGood popcorn! The students listed below have each opened a pop-up popcorn store and are in a race for the highest sales — please click the link/s to order popcorn in a range of flavors (which will be shipped directly to you). The stores remain open until Monday, Sept 30 at 5pm.

REVOLUTION BAKE SALE

Back by popular demand, our SDLC Bake Sale Fundraiser will be held Tue Oct 8 and Wed Oct 9 (or while supplies last), from 9:30am–2:30pm in the ground floor lobby of 230 S. Broad Street. Please consider sending in your baked good(s) on Mon Oct 7 — and include an ingredients’ list/allergy warning for all donations. Sign up here.  Please stop by our table to buy something tasty!

HALLOWEEN ROLLER SKATE COSTUME PARTY

Save the date for our roller skating fundraiser on Sun Oct 27 from 4:30–7:30pm at Philly Skate Plex (11586 Roosevelt Blvd). Stay tuned for ticket purchasing info in the next newsletter!

Friends Select School — CommUNITY Symposium

On Saturday, Oct 5 from 10am–3:30pm, Revolution School’s 11th and 12th graders will have the opportunity to attend the CommUNITY Symposium at Friends Select School (1651 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy). The program consists of keynote speakers, performers, and workshops (lunch will be provided). Registration and breakfast will be 9–10am, and there will be an optional reception from 5-6pm on the FSS rooftop field. Please contact Sydnie with any questions.

Curtis Symphony Orchestra — Free Tickets

There are two upcoming symphonies that our students can attend for free — it’s a fantastic opportunity to see their Revolution School classmates perform! The code is CURTIS100STUDENT.

Curtis Symphony Orchestra: Prokofiev & Time for Three (click for tickets)

Sun Oct 27, 3pm at Marian Anderson Hall in the Kimmel Center.

This program pays homage to the past while embracing the future. Jean Sibelius‘s Finlandia, a poignant tone poem featured in the inaugural Curtis Symphony Orchestra concert, sets the stage.

Embark on a musical odyssey with GRAMMY Award-winning conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Curtis Symphony Orchestra. In this enchanting afternoon, delight in groundbreaking works by luminaries Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Florence Price, harmoniously paired with Antonín Dvořák‘s pastoral Symphony No. 8.

If You Are Not Early, You Are Late!

Student attendance has been outstanding these first two weeks of school! Let’s keep up the good work. Please be sure to have your students get to school by 8:15 am to ensure that classes can start promptly at 8:30 am. If you know that your child is running late or will be absent, please contact Carolyn (carolyn@revolutionschool.org) no later than 8:15 am. Please note that if a student is consistently late, you will be invited to a meeting with Antonio. Attendance is a part of the academic transcript.

Safe2Say Something Student Training

A reminder that our Safe2Say Something training program takes place on October 22 during community meeting time. We encourage you to download the Safe2Say Something app and save the phone number 1-844-SAF2SAY in your contacts to report any concerns quickly and confidentially. Join Antonio Williams and Ivy Harris from 8–9am for the kickoff of our monthly Coffee & Conversation! This will be repeated throughout the school year on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Coffee and donuts will be served.

Thursday Oct 10 — Back to School for Parents & Guardians, 4–6pm

Please RSVP for Revolution School’s Back to School for Parents & Guardians. This is a great opportunity to mingle with teachers, staff, and other parents — we will talk about our curriculum, special projects, and we’ll provide a tour of our new space on the 20th floor! Please do not miss this important 2024-25 orientation where we will detail how best to engage with the school!

All students and families (grades 9–12) are welcome to attend the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) College Fair in Philadelphia. Click this link for more details.

Wednesday Nov 20 — 2024 Malcolm Bernard HBCU Fair, 3:30-7pm.

The Malcolm Bernard Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair is the largest HBCU College Fair on the East Coast. Some colleges and universities in attendance will be offering on-site acceptances, so students are encouraged to bring copies of their unofficial transcripts. Registration is now open and is REQUIRED. Please use THIS link to register. The fair will be held at Martin Luther King High School, 6100 Stenton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR WEEK

WELLNESS SPEAKER SERIES

Revolution School had the pleasure of hosting Jade Javon (Yogacitta) and The Village of Arts & Humanities, to lead our 9th and 10th graders in yoga and mindfulness practices as part of our Health Matters Wellness series. Jade is an amazing educator who makes yoga fun and accessible, offering free classes for teens at Space & Grace in Germantown.

DRAMA

Revolution School is thrilled to welcome Tenera Calem to the team! Tenera will teach Drama Public Speaking to the 11th and 12th grade students. Welcome, Tenera — we are excited for you to share your expertise with the students and the team!

PHYSICS

This week, Grades 9 and 10 worked together to determine the best way to measure speed and velocity.

FIELDWORK

Grades 9 and 10 stopped by City Hall to witness protesters of the proposed 76’ers arena, followed by a trip to PAFA for a guided tour of their Philadelphia Revealed exhibition, which included artifacts from the last 350 years. They completed their fieldtrip with a stop at Reading Terminal Market for lunch.

Grades 10, 11 and 12 were given a tour of Penn State Abington’s campus and attended multiple information sessions.

OPPORTUNITIES OUTSIDE OF REVOLUTION

Calling All Girl Bosses

This is a year-long program empowering girls in Philadelphia to lead the change they want to see in their neighborhoods. It was developed by Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) as a blueprint to give Philadelphia girls in grades 6–12 the skills they need to identify a community problem and take action to find a solution. The program is FREE for girls. Lunch and transportation will be provided for each workshop. Click this link to learn more.

Innovation League

This is an opportunity for entrepreneurial students in Grades 9–12 in Philadelphia who want to learn how to build businesses while growing their skills and solving problems in their community. Like a traditional sports league, students attend weekly practices led by tech mentors and build their technology, leadership, and social skills. Registration closes October 1st.

PAIS / ISACS Parent & Community Series Webinar

Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools (PAIS), in collaboration with

Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS), put together a

fantastic series of webinars for parents — and Revolution School is pleased to offer
