CELEBRATING & PLANNING

Fun Fact: January was named after Janus, the Roman god of beginnings and transitions. February’s name is believed to stem from February, an ancient festival dedicated to ritual springtime cleaning and washing.

Congratulations to Gré for gaining admission to his first choice college,  University of the Arts, with a generous merit scholarship.

January Birthdays: India Lockridge: January 9, and Carolyn Arosell, January 26.

Chinese New Year 2024: Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon; 2023 the Year of the Rabbit. And check out Ways to Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Philly!

HIGHLIGHTS

9th & 10th grade students are studying Conflict-resolution in history class. This week students took on historic characters to attempt to negotiate and resolve an actual conflict that happened in Ancient Greece. Students incorporated a framework to help resolve their conflict — which allowed them to look at conflicts in history not just as a series of wars, but as moments when leaders had a range of choices to meet their groups’ needs.

The conflict analysis framework has real-life applications, and helped students differentiate the interests, beliefs, emotions, and identities of groups in conflict. Through role play, students learn to use negotiation skills to deal with opposing interests, and to address underlying grievances that perpetuated the conflict.

11th & 12th Fieldwork: on Thursday, our cohort heard from Don Lizaire, a reentry case manager at Broad Street Ministry. A few of our students even got to role play a mock appointment with Mr. Lizaire.

Students attended a youth paint day for the Futures Without Guns mural at the Science Center after school Thursday with muralist Rachel Reyes-Vazquez.
