Three of our students who are dual-enrolled at Curtis Institute of Music: Xiang, Sooeon, and Corina, performed in the Curtis Symphony Orchestra this past weekend. The program, Electrifying Virtuosity, featured two world premier compositions by James Ra and Grammy Award-winning Curtis faculty member, Steven Mackey.

This Week’s Field Work Details — Thursday March 21
Grades 9-10
Our Environmental Science students will be going to Glen Foerd Mansion. Students will be taking a bus and should plan to bring a packed lunch to eat once they arrive.
Grades 11-12
Our students will have their normal lunch block and can choose to pack or buy their lunch. Fieldwork details are still waiting to be confirmed and will be announced to students early this week.

Covid Guidelines
There is no more specific quarantine restriction. Students who are sick should stay home and should not come back to school unless they are 24-hours fever free. Once students return to school, they should practice good hygiene and wear a mask for up to five days. Click this link for the CDC’s press release.

Student Leadership Council Clothing Drive
The Student Leadership Council is asking for students to bring in any clean clothes, scarves and coats to be donated to Broad Street Ministry. Clothing collection will run through the start of spring break (Friday March 22). Special thanks to January for taking the lead and encouraging everyone to bring in donations!

I AM PHL Contest
This Spring Break, UPenn Talent Search will host 9–12 grade participants on campus to create and submit poetry and visual art entries for the I AM PHL Contest, responding to the theme “I am College Bound.”
Students may register for one or two sessions — Tuesday, March 26: Poetry, or Wednesday, March 27: Visual Art. Supplies and mentors will be provided. Scholars of any skill level may participate!
Contest winners will receive a $1,000 cash prize, the chance to be seen at the 2024 Wawa Welcome America Festival, and more! Space is limited, and you must register to attend. Sign up no later than Sunday, March 17.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Summer Academy
PAFA’s most rigorous program for talented teen artists, is accepting applications for their four week college-level instruction from July 8 – August 2. To be considered for the scholarship, students must apply by April 10. PAFA also offers One-Week Intensives open to all levels of artistic experience, which allow teen artists to choose their own adventure. STAMP: Students at Museums in Philly
Through STAMP any Philadelphia high school student can visit 20 museums and cultural sites for free. Just show your high school student ID and enjoy the STAMP discount. Here is a list of the participating museums!

FIELDWORK & COMMUNITY-BUILDING

Grades 9–10
Students toured the Overbrook Environmental Education Center to learn about their dedication to education, conservation, and public health. They also got to participate in a hands-on activity where they investigated environmental impacts on their own community.

Grades 11–12
Our students first went to Franklin Square and enjoyed the beautiful day by eating lunch outside! They then visited The Youth Art & Self-Empowerment Project (YASP). Students heard from members of the YASP team about the work they are doing to end the practice of incarcerating young people as adults. In addition they discussed how YASP provides a creative and safe space for incarcerated youth to express themselves.

Doodle for Google
This week during Community Building, students had the opportunity to participate in the Doodle for Google competition. This competition asks students to design their own Google banner based on this year’s theme “My wish for the next 25 years.” National winners of the competition will have their doodle displayed on the Google homepage for 24 hours and receive scholarship money for them and their school!
