Weekly Newsletter #6

Behind the scenes đź“· outdoor wellness

Dear RVLTN Families,

Technically, this past week was our third week of school. But it was only the first that we met for all five days of the week. So, in many ways, it gave us a sense of traction and momentum that we haven’t been able to manifest until now.

While our in-person students are experiencing the program in all its fullness, we are still making adjustments to the schedule and curriculum to best meet the needs of our hybrid students. Each week during Friday afternoon Field Work Expeditions, for instance, there will be an alternative program option for students unable to join us in person. The first such remote learning program was offered for our Eastern State Penitentiary visit last week. And the second was posted in Google Classroom (slightly before noon on Friday) for those unable to join us in person at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens and for the historical neighborhood walking tour around it. So, our first week’s Field Work had a more Humanities-centric flavor. This week’s is more Art-centric. Next week’s will likely have more STEM-centric emphasis (more details on that to come later). These are all ways we continue to break down the walls between learning and life.

Onward,

Mike P.

September 27, Vaccine Q&A with Dr. Vicki Bralow

We’ve heard from our students and families that they have vaccine-related questions. With so much information – and misinformation – out there, we’re grateful that Dr. Vicki Bralow has agreed to help answer these questions. On Monday, September 27 from 7;00 – 8:00 PM, Dr. Bralow will join us to share the latest evidence-based information on the Delta variant, vaccines, and answer your questions live. Zoom link below.

Vaccine Policy Updates

Students who have been fully vaccinated may return to school 3 full days after they receive their 2nd shot. Please update your vaccination status HERE before your first in-person day.

Students who are unvaccinated may not join field work as we wish to be consistent with our in-school policy for unvaccinated students. We will continue to work to provide virtual options for those who are remote.

Family Directory Now On EDUCATE

You can now access an archive of all weekly newsletters from your EDUCATE dashboard. This resource may be helpful if you are trying to set up a carpool as it contains zipcode and contact information.

Last week during Friday fieldwork, students visited an iconic Philadelphia landmark with a storied history–the Eastern State Penitentiary. Not only was the ESP visit related to summer reading selection, The Other Wes Moore (central concept is that, despite similar beginnings, Moore the author ended up leading a successful and fulfilling life while “the other” Wes will spend every day of the rest of his life behind bars.), it ties to our Fall curricular project theme of Maps and Mapping. In US History, we’re studying the US prison problem and will be mapping the development and growth of Philadelphia from Colonial times to the present.
